This was the last date the original lineup of Jane's Addiction played together. Contrary to common belief, this was not a Lollapalooza 91 show. The concert and after party were both caught by amateur video. The artwork has several errors, including the date (listed as Sept 9) and misnaming "Then She Did" as "Classic Girl" and "Chip Away" as "Trip Away".

Jane’s Addiction had their first major break up in 1991, right after their final famous Honolulu gig in which Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins played a couple of tunes butt naked. Sadly, they were at the height of their game in terms of recognition and creative energy. Farrell formed Porno for Pyros while Dave Navarro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers, replacing John Frusciante who was let go for drug use.

Opening act was the German band "Lost in Venice", four young guys from Stuttgart. They were quite good after all in my opinion, and I also bought one of their 4-track CDs (quite cheap: DM10). Their music was quite different to TBS, but I still liked it. And "Ugly Faces" proved to be a fabulous song. They started their set at 19:45 and played 45 minutes. Another 35-minute-wait and TBS entered the stage to something like a circus march or so. The setlist was the same as in Cologne. I managed to get hold of a setlist after the gig, but it wasn't easy! the crewmembers on stage didn't hear me asking for a setlist, and security was first asking me (for their level quite polite) to shove off, then they were about to kick me out. Just in time I caught the attention of a crew member who eagerly passed me and another fan a setlist each. When they saw him loosening the pieces of paper from the ground, security was at least generous enough to wait until we got them in our hand before they threw us out the hall.About the first half hour of the concert was a bit poor regarding audience response. But until the end the atmosphere was really excellent, one band member also said so after the show. The entire band enjoyed themselves and even Hamster was walking around a lot, smiling and, well lot of dancing compared to his usual level. The performances and the sound were fantastic. During Perfect 10 Paul was pointing to Sean when singing anorexic chicks and to John Hoff (not sure about the surname) afterwards - Dave R.'s stand in. I noticed that Paul even altered the lyrics in the beginning to "He’s a perfect 10" and so on. The song seemed to be big fun for everyone in this version. Paul made some mistakes in Alone, one can see here what happens if the practice is missing ;-) They didn't play Alone anytime last tour, did they? Paul's rendition of Rotterdam was great as well. He introduced the song like "This is a Jacqui song that I have to sing now, so don't be to harsh with me". Of course the cheering after the song was fanatic and Paul said smiling "Thanks for your generosity." :-) I was happy they added The Med, and Baby Plase Go, still my fav track of PIR, kicked ass! The acoustic version of the River should have been at least b-side to the new single. This song and afterwards Let Love Speak Up Itself were an amazing moment. But okay, I'll stop the babbling about specific songs, which wouldn't lead anywhere than "everysong was great..."

DAVE GROHL - FOO FIGHTERS . Wow , was this guy happy to be there onstage playing ( maybe it was the money he got to be there , not sure ) . He came out screaming , kept screaming , then he rocked , worked the crowd , rocked some more , celebrated his birthday , yelled , rocked a bunch more . Decaf anyone ? Former bass player for Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins , Melissa Auf der Maur , handed Dave his birthday cake and gave him a kiss . It was sweet . He didn´t settle his ass down though , just kept going like the Duracell bunny . Energetic fella , that Dave .

Day two of the Rock in Rio For a Better World festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil began on Saturday (Jan. 13) much the same way day one did: Hot. Africa hot. Or Brazil hot, rather. Temperatures hit around 98 degrees in Rio, prompting festival organizers to bring out the water cannons periodically (why they didn't do that when temps hit 104 degrees on opening day is anybody's guess).

It is with some trepidation that I speak of Jeff Buckley bootlegs. For one, we know for sure that he hated them. And this isn’t a Buckley voiced by Columbia records. It is somewhat ironically that we have his own expression of his vexation at them on a bootleg itself. The recording of his performance with band members at Arlene’s Grocery (NYC) in February 1997, a very short period of time before his death, he mentions: ‘I’ve stopped getting stoned at the gigs … that’s why I’m so touchy about the bootlegs, because I’ve said some shit.’

On the evening of May 29, 1997, Buckley's band flew in intending to join him in his Memphis studio to work on the newly written material. That same evening, Buckley went swimming in Wolf River Harbor,[94] a slackwater channel of the Mississippi River, while wearing boots, all of his clothing, and singing the chorus of the song "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin.[95] A roadie of Buckley's band, Keith Foti, remained ashore. After moving the radio and a guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, Foti looked up to see that Buckley was gone. Despite a determined rescue effort that night, Buckley remained missing. On June 4, his body was spotted by a tourist on a riverboat and was brought ashore.[95]
The autopsy to clarify the cause of Buckley's death confirmed Buckley had taken no illegal drugs before his swim and a drug overdose was therefore ruled out as cause of death.[96] In order to clarify the situation of his death, this statement was released from the Buckley estate:
"Jeff Buckley's death was not "mysterious," related to drugs, alcohol, or suicide. We have a police report, a medical examiner's report, and an eye witness to prove that it was an accidental drowning, and that Mr. Buckley was in a good frame of mind prior to the accident."

This is an amazing show including stunning versions of Dream Brother, Lilac Wine, Mojo Pin and Kanga-Roo; an amazing medley of Lover You Should've Come Over and All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun (which is first of the two performances of this song, the other being on 1996-03-01 at Selina's, Sydney, Australia, 1996-03-01, as far as I know); the one and only performance of the traditional song "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" (which is also sang by Bob F***ing Dylan, as Jeff Buckley calls him); one of the best performances of Hallelujah with extra lyrics which are slightly different than the version on the Bataclan show, adding even more to the uniqueness of this show'.

Jeff Buckley - Born Again From The Rhythm - The Grace Outtakes

When Jeff Buckley was alive, his Grace album (1994) wasn't the seller everyone had hoped though it had good word of mouth. Since his death in 1997, the album has gained in popularity and there was even a Legacy Edition of the album released in 2004 with a bonus disc and DVD. Considered one of the most promising artists of his generation after the release of Grace, It does seem as if Buckley had a good selection of songs when he entered Bearsville Recording Studios and Born Again From The Rhythm collects demos that are sure to please his fans. For example, there are two sweet takes of Dylan's Just Like A Woman and smouldering versions of Dinks Song and Led Zep's Night Flight respectively. Just like Beatles, Sinatra or Elvis outtake collections which contain multiple takes of the same song, here there are three versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and three different takes of Dylan's Mama, You've Been On My Mind. With the singer prominent on acoustic/electric guitar, consider this Jeff Buckley Unplugged. Overall, the sound is excellent.

Black Sessions are performances of the live music broadcast on the French Radio station France Inter. These are recorded in front of a live audience and feature on a C'est Lenoir show. A French Radio DJ's name is Bernard Lenoir ("lenoir'' means "black" in english) The first performance was in 1992 and since then many French and international artists have performed Black Sessions. Bernard Lenoir is a radio pioneer, a living legend, a discoverer of new talents in english, american and french rock/pop music. In the Black Sessions he invites groups that are for the most part relative beginners but who often go on to become references in the world of indie rock. Unlike the BBC’s « Peel Sessions » the bands play live, in one take and in front of an audience of 200 people.

I will resist the inclination to give an over the top and gushing review and just say, for any fan this is a must have. For anyone not familiar with them, and at the risk of being accused of musical heresy, their recorded material is a much better starting point, then you will just want more, and settle for any bootleg, bearing in mind the principle that one persons pleasure, is another's poison...

Simple Minds - Liverpool

It could have been 1987 all over again, except in those days these boys used to play stadiums all over Europe, not tents!
And the crowd, the biggest collection of mid-life crisis aged men I've ever seen in one place outside of a Harley Davidson convention, have a little less hair and a bit more round the waist. But Simple Minds are still here, Alive and Kicking...obviously!
Their old stuff sounds as fresh today as it did back then and they're the tunes that make up most of tonights set. The die-hards wouldn't settle for anything less. Local heroes China Crisis get things off to a cracking start and get an unbelievable ovation. So when Jim Kerr and co come on stage it seems to take a while for things to get going. They pull out a couple of old, and rarely heard gems like Love Song and East at Easter....perhaps not surprising when you consider they've got an album of early tunes to promote. By the time they rip into Alive and Kicking the crowd are going mad. Favourites like Waterfront, Mandela Day and a fantastic version of Ghost Dancing mixed with Gloria go down a storm. But the biggest cheer of the night is reserved for Don't you forget about Me, a bit ironic when you consider its a song Jim Kerr never wanted to record. When it was used in the teen film The Breakfast Club, it became Simple Minds biggest hit and I think he's learnt to love it over the years. Glaswegian Kerr seems as up for it tonight as he did 20 years ago, bouncing around the stage and leading the crowd in a chorus of 'laa la la la laa'. The days of stadiums may be behind them, but with this much energy and songs this good.....and fans this loyal....Simple Minds could still be heading for that Glittering Prize.

One doesn't have to look far for an apt metaphor to describe Simple Minds' performance Wednesday at the Universal Amphitheatre. The set was much like one of the group's songs itself: slow and rather ponderous at the start, but building to an invigorating crescendo.The difference was lost on the devoted crowd, packed into the hall for the first L.A. show in five years by the sporadically chart-making band. The audience cheered for new songs and old, good songs and bad, sincere remarks from lead singer Jim Kerr (the first time he asked, "Everything OK?") and stupid ones (the sixth time he asked). None of the show's first half-hour deserved much applause. "Real Life," the sublime title cut of the group's new album, was overwhelmed by a cascade of smoke, lights and Kerr's grand gestures, perhaps borne of routinely playing stadium-size venues in Europe. "Travelling Man," another of the album's uniformly strong numbers, fared little better. Not until Simple Minds plunged into "Don't You (Forget About Me)," their 1985 No. 1 hit, did the set jell. Fueled by the authoritative guitar playing of Charlie Burchill, the group ultimately earned the adulation of the audience with enjoyable versions of past hits and future candidates, including the appealingly wistful current single "See the Lights."

Frontman Jim Kerr led a rejuvenated Minds back to their roots with a sneak preview of their stunning new album Black & White 050505 and an impressive collection of their greatest hits. At their peak, the band filled huge stadiums and arenas all over the world, but their choice of the legendary King Tut's for their comeback made this a night to remember for the lucky few in attendance. Opening with Stay Visible, new single Home and without doubt a future single Jeweller to The Stars the atmosphere was electric and judging by the reaction of stalwarts Kerr, guitarist Charlie Burchill and drummer Mel Gaynor, newcomers Ed Duffy on bass and Andy Gillespie on keyboards, they are more than capable of climbing back to the top. Love Song started a collection of their greatest hits including Speed Your Love, oldie Premonition, Alive and Kicking and Waterfront received a rapturous welcome with the frontman taking a back seat and letting the mesmerised crowd take over. New Gold Dream ended an amazing set but with the band and crowd enjoying every minute they re-appeared for a five-song encore including new song Stranger and old favourites (Dont You) Forget About Me and Sanctify.

I was one of the lucky ones to be at the show. Vox-pops taken outside and video as well - they tried to get us singing This Charming Man. Inside was a tiny art-deco theatre, approximately 14 rows of tiered seats, holding about 180 people - great views for everyone. Following a short set of film clips, Shocking Blue and the N-Y Dolls, the stage was revealed - bare-chested US Soldier cut out at the rear doing a muscle man pose and the words REFUSAL across his chest. Mark Radcliffe intoduces the show pretending to be naked a la the recent naked band picture. Morrissey and the band come on and play the show you heard on the radio. Morrissey in vintage blue jeans and pink shirt, the band in navy blue jeans and t-shirts. Plenty of microphone lead whip lashing, standing on the monitor, crouching, kneeling - if you've seen him before you know the score. Unusually, the band, particularly Boz come to stage front instead of standing behind Morrissey. We mostly stay seated except for This Charming Man - this was because we were told we'd get chucked out if we were unruly. This is the BBC so we do as we're told. After the last song broadcast, Mark Radcliffe announces 2 songs from the set list remain unplayed and do we want to hear them? We do, so after a couple of minutes they return, Morrissey in a change of shirt, blue check, to play All You Need Is Me and, his words, 'housewives favourite' First of the Gang. We all stand for these 2 which seems to be appreciated. Great end to a great intimate evening - the pleasure, the privilege was mine.

This was my very first radiohead concert and i was thrilled to see the band play. unimmagionable these days, but before the show, the members walked around Paradiso while we were sitting on the stairs of this best concert room in europa.
I remember very much the immence sound of this band during the show. I've never heard something like this. it was unforgatable. I rememebr johny wearing an apparatus which could make his fingers tremble while guitarplaying. after the show the same mister greenwood started up to sign autographs. I held Pablo Honey in my hand and he asked: is that ours?.... he just could believe it. "Nice front" he said......Oh what a perfect day.

Ah, perfect. The capacious, corporate-kicking marquee and a two hour bout of cerebralcathartic old rock with new, improved noodles. Tent alone warrants a paragraph; warm, roomy and teched-up to the hips with three screen sets at regular intervals for remotely positioned midgets. Hence, a Radiohead movie with in-house band. Unless you jumped up and down. Which, of course, is unavoidable when streams of sonic terrorism are blowing your brain to stratospheric pleasure stuffed pieces. New pal 'Kid A' squibbles and struts asymmetrically; the band effecting an immediate introduction by thundering on with 'The National Anthem'. There're melodies in overlayered aural onslaughts y'know (see: My Bloody Valentine), listen harder and longer. Fry, braincells, fry. And the delicacies; 'Everything in its Right Place', showcasing Thom Yorkes angel-robbed tonsils, yet again. But the celestially-corded ones got the Devil inside. 'Knives Out', the virtually rapping, screaming unreleased hardcore and in-your-face newy that sat next to 'Just' and rendered it Jurassic. Communal 'OK...' singalongs and a duo of encores including the taut and teasing 'Talk Show Host' satisfied nostalgics, like a comfort blanket. But the unveiled unheards buzzed long after closedown

This CD may be considered "XXII II MCMXCIV" of the Bleach era quality-wise. You will never find a better sounding Bleach era show. You can tell the band was having a good time at this show. The setlist was typical (except for the encore - Help Me, I'm Hungry), however, the unique thing about the show is a drunk guy that screams at the band throughout their performance. You hear this guy with a German accent screaming "PLAY ABOUT F@@@ING GIRLS!!!!"... "TUNE YOUR F@@@ING GUITAR AND PLAY ABOUT F@@@ING GIRLS, MAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!"... Krist has a good time with him and yells back several times during the show and at one point sings some lines from The Who's "I'm a Boy" and dedicates it to the heckler. The entire show is wild and full of energy. AMAZING, a MUST-HAVE type of recording!! Krist got involved with a bunch of drunks in the audience who were disrespecting women, prompting him to give a long speech about how he is a girl and a brief attempt at singing The Who's "I'm A Boy." Tad Doyle most likely played guitar on "Vendetagainst," since Kurt invited him onstage to play and a guitar can be heard on circulating recordings (the song was normally played without guitar).

I enjoyed Bjork on 5th Dec at Orchard Hall in Tokyo. The Orchestra is Tokyo Phil., it belongs to the Orchard Hall, I tought that means the orchestra would be expected excellent and we could share the harmony of Bjork, sounds, and orchestra. But it betrayed my expectation deadly. I supporse Bjork also felt some unsatisfuction to the orchestra. (it's just my supporse. I don't know what she feels exactly even though I wish that.) Because Bjork holds a mike in her right hand, but she sometimes moves her left hand violently as if she plays a cello instead of the cellists and violinists. I feel sorry to her. I know she loves music, sounds, and people. But I couldn't feel the orchestra's love to her. The audience was quiet. Because most Japanese is so shy to express their feelings. But I saw some people kept their tears on their beautiful black eyes, with their impressions and love for Bjork which cannot to be expressed in words. Bjork answered to us. She hit her left hand hardly many times singing Unison, on the lyrics, "one hand loves the other". I felt love from Bjork, and still I'm feeling. To talk about Bjork's stage in Japan, I think there's the best way of realization to share love with Bjork's music, and we haven't found it yet. But I believe we can find it soon. I send Bjork many thanks and love. I'm sending, and it goes on. Thank you, and hope you around the world enjoy Bjork's music.

REM in Hyde Park July 2005 - a gig that had to be postponed due to the London terrorist attack. Firstly - congratulations to the organisers, promoters and performers who were so quick to rearrange the concert in the light of the atrocities in the city on the 7th - they must have worked really hard to ensure that the REM gig went ahead in the end despite the devastation caused by the attacks. Also a very big thank you to the Showsec staff who handled stewarding and security at this gig - we think that it takes strength and courage to carry on regardless following such a major incident and to show that we will not be cowed and we will not be beaten. We also think that stewarding and security have a tough job to do at the best of times - their work has just got even harder - thank you all for turning up to work at such a difficult and uncertain time and for doing your bit in helping to keep us safe.As for the show itself? well - it's really, really rare that performers these days don't put on an amazing performance - and as you'd expect from a band of the calibre of REM they stormed it - an opening rendition of 'Bad Day' set the scene closely followed by 'What's the frequency Kenneth' certainly sent the crowd into a frenzy of anticipation from which the guys didn't disappoint. There was a really odd guest appearance by Patti Smith to duet on 'E-bow the letter' the sound was awful - the mike was at the wrong height and she couldn't be heard - the crowd still seemed sympathetic and forgiving though. For a little over two hours Michael Stipe's raw energy and passion was breathtaking to watch - and boy - was he in good voice - the rendition of 'Leaving New York' and 'Everybody Hurts' was stunning - making the hair on the back of your neck stand up and leaving you with a tingle at the lyrical quality and what it evokes. A great lights and video show thoroughly complimented the on stage activity - through to the totally scintillating 'Orange Crush' colour co-ordination. There were just too many show stopping moments to isolate any one as being the one that stood out above any others - 'Losing my Religion' and 'End of the World' and of course 'Man in the Moon' were delivered - and boy were they delivered! The fabulous and evocative "Nightswimming" was saved for the encore (well - what passes for an encore these days!) with Stipey sitting on Mills's piano before sliding off and giving him a snog! Stipey's blue stripped appearance for this tour added to the sense of theatre and nodded in the direction of the bizarre yet beautiful which perhaps best sums up this enigmatic, talented and unique individual - 'it's the end of the tour as we know it' he said - we can't wait for the next one.

It was a two-disc promo distributed to radio stations, so now you can be as cool (and with ears as happy) as the big dogs. Features Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) and Scott McCaughey (Minus 5) as band additions for this set.The venue was previously known as the Palace Theatre when R.E.M. played there in '83 and '84. Earlier in the day the band had taped an interview for the Charlie Rose Show. This was done via satellite since Charlie was in New York.

Postelection letdown? Midlife crisis? Jet lag? Whatever the reason, R.E.M. never seemed to hit its stride last night at a sold-out McCaw Hall. While it was great to see the band close-up in the intimate venue, there were only a few moments in the two-hour, 24-song set where the concert caught fire. Although the show kicked off promisingly with "Finest Worksong" and "Begin the Begin," it soon settled into a pattern of mediocre, mostly slow songs, including seven from the new "Around the Sun" album, most them just as middling and unfocused as they are on the disc. The one song from it that was well put together and worked live was "Leaving New York," with its undercurrent of post-9/11 sorrow. Michael Stipe and the band played several anti-Bush/pro-Kerry concerts during the election, but the only reference last night came during "Drive," with its reference to being "bushwacked." The word elicited a cheer. The eighth song in the set was the first one that the audience really got into, with fans crowding the front of the stage, dancing wildly some imitating Stipe's quirky, elongated moves. But by the next song, "The Outsiders," from the new album, the excitement level dipped again. "The One I Love," the sweet ballad a dozen songs in, was pleasant, with couples cuddling closer as they swayed to the beat. Then more so-so songs until the sure bet "Losing My Religion," which had the whole place moving. But Stipe seemed to put it down when he introduced it, saying, "You indulged us, now we'll indulge you" as if it were a sop to the crowd who didn't appreciate the new songs. The show finally got down to business in the six-song encore, starting with "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" and also including the rocking "Permanent Vacation," the oldest song in the show, going back to 1980, "I Wanna Be a DJ (At the End of the World)," an obscure song, added to the set probably because it rhymes "battle" with "Seattle," a reference to the WTO riots.

Moon River is done twice. At the end of the first time (with one word left in the song) someone screams out "Fuck you!" to which Stipe yells back "If you don't like it, you can leave!". He and Mike immediately start over from the beginning. The same guy yells the same remark at the start of the second encore which Stipe replies curtly, "Fuck you, too!". There is another story that the fan was actually shouting, 'Fuck, YEAH!' in appreciation. Apparently the fan actually wrote a letter to the editor of one of the local papers hoping to clarify the incident.

Sometimes when you hit that shutter button, you know - you FEEL it’s the one. When I took the picture above, I knew I’d captured the moment. This is Michael Stipe looking out over 50,000 people at the Pinkpop festival in 1989. He’d grabbed a chair, set it as close to the edge of the stage as possible and he was singing ‘Summertime’. We’d been standing in the sun all day. Some of our group were slamdancing to The Pixies. Some of us were laughing at Tanita Tikaram who couldn’t hold a tune to save her life (even her fans turned away in disgust). Some of us felt sorry for Marc Almond, pelted with food by an intolerant audience> We had all dropped our jaws in surprise when Elvis Costello came up and defied all logic by being solid, stunning and simply… sexy. Costello, belting out ‘I want you’, had broken a string mid-song. He’d stood there, solo, still crying the words, his arms stretched out wide. A roadie rushed in, literally sliding in on his knees. He freed the singer of his guitar, slipped him on a new one, and plugged it in just in time for Costello to seamlessly continue his song. We had never been more in awe of musicianship. We had made our way to the front row. Pressed up against the barrier, a little left of center. R.E.M. were last on the bill. It had been 2 years since they played our country. Two years since I had reluctantly gone to see them and had come back a fan. We didn’t know it then, but R.E.M.’s Pinkpop appearance was to be their last in Holland. Ever. Believe it or not, the next two occasions the band booked Dutch venues both were cancelled for health reasons. This one almost didn’t happen either. The accident prone band nearly had to cancel at the last moment because Bill Berry’d been bitten by a tick, back in his beloved Georgia garden. The man nearly died of Rocky Mountain Fever in a German hospital. But they patched him up. I still think the band were at their best in ‘89. Stipe in his white floppy suit, sporting what he now calls an ‘unfortunate’ haircut, seemed on the verge of insanity. Buck hadn’t put on the pounds yet, and it was before ueber-nerd Mills got into dye jobs and glittery suits. And… damn it, they still had their drummer. They launched straight into mayhem: Exhuming McCarthy, Turn you Inside Out, Stand, Orange Crush… the set heavily dominated by Document and Green favourites. Stipe swirled around the microphone stand, brandishing his megaphone. Feeling Gravity’s Pull felt like the apocalypse. Then they let us all come down gently. King of Birds, Summertime, Swan Swan H and finally, with Mills playing bass sitting down on the edge of the stage, ending with You are the Everything.

Again,as we can see from the lineup, this was a bigger Festival than the preceding year’s event. Due to the growth in audience numbers there were additions to the farm office, communications, welfare and medical teams. The Theatre and Children's Areas moved to new homes, the first Classical music tent was introduced and the market areas relocated from the top of the site. £130,000 was raised for CND and local charities. 60,000 attended . The weather was generally much kinder than in 1985. although one correspondent remembers it raining on the Friday during the Psychedelic Furs set. "Bishbosh's "memoirs of the festival below indicate just how easy it was to obtain hallucinogens at the festival and that for many the music was just incidental to the overall experience of the festival itself.

At 12 noon on Sunday 22 June 1986, The Housemartins were the opening act on Stage One of Glastonbury CND Festival. This was the third and final day of a musicfest which included the likes of That Petrol Emotion, The Waterboys, The Pogues, Psychedelic Furs, The Go-Betweens, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, The Cure, Half Man Half Biscuit, Madness, Microdisney and The Mighty Lemon Drops. Only 9 tracks, but this is the full set.

1989 was a huge year for R.E.M. The band had just released Green which would be their biggest seller to date on their new label Warner Brothers. Green was a departure from their earlier work as the band initiated a “Pop” Sound from their previous rock records. The most popular single from this album ‘Stand’, was one of the self-proclaimed “Dumb Pop Songs” from Michael Stipe. For the first time, R.E.M. came to terms with the MTV Generation by providing fans with their first taste of some more “Fan Friendly” videos, Fans from around the globe would learn about the “Stand Dance”. They possibly got a laugh out of the video from ‘Pop Song 89’, which featured topless females along with Michael, an obvious dig on some of the scantly clad models that were featured in these videos. Both the sound and the change in labels created a bit of criticism from fans to claimed that the band had ‘Sold Out’. The argument against this is that the band had both never properly been promoted up to this point. While the arguments persist that they might not have put out fan-friendly entertainment for the mainstream, they still had very little support worldwide. The Green Tour would be the first tour that the band would embark and hit all the major markets, playing both Australia and New Zealand for the first time.Outside of touring breaks the band would be on the road from late January 1989 through November and in that time travel from Japan, New Zealand, then returing to America (March through early May), before embarking on a tour of Europe (Mid May through early July) before returning to America (Mid-September through Mid-November). The Green Tour was a perfect mix of Art and Stadium Rock. While the band had become much more inclined by this point to stick to the setlists, the choreography of the show was such that it was necessary. Stipe’s lead in’s to songs such as World Leader Pretend brought a different dimension to the song. The use of the megaphone on ‘Turn You Inside-out’ makes me question why the band never used that on the album. In my opinion, songs such as ‘Get Up’ and ‘Pop Song 89’ were given a sense of insurgency onstage that was missing on the album. Even Stipe’s cynicism to the lead in to ‘Stand’ is still something to giggle over. Even as the band’s popularity had grown to this point, they still had time to laugh at themselves and in the case of ‘Stand’, it was one of the first points where you can see them second guessing themselves. Since the Green Tour, ‘Stand’ has only been played on a handful of occasions. The Video ‘Tourfilm’, has long been regarded as the best of the R.E.M. live videos for making the video both an artifact of the tour as well as an artistic piece. By mixing both black and white and various editing features the videos stands above and beyond the other videos which tend to just record the events onstage.

A very interesting setlist to say the least. Although many might consider the true legendary show to be the 'It Crawled from the South' show on 10/31/83, this show shows a number of cover songs and a working grasp of many of the songs that would appear on Reckoning. Added bonus is the Community Trolls set that includes the odd "Six Stock Answers", and My Roof Your Roof, which are unknown to be released in any other format.

393 Oconee Street Across the street from the old church re-dedicated to R.E.M. was an empty commercial sewing factory and fiberglass fabrication plant known as Stitchcraft, now the parking lot of the Waterford Place Condominiums. Paul Thomas (of The Oracle and now X-Ray Cafe) and Chris DeBarr (of Downstairs fame) arranged several shows each month here throughout the early and mid-'80s. The site was later known as Lunch Paper. Bands played in a square, cinderblock room under high ceilings in a partial basement with high industrial windows and a courtyard. No bar, no restrooms. Couches came and went. BYOB. This was The Primates' first practice space. It became known for outrageous Halloween parties. Memorable performances include The Replacements, The Primates, The Tragic Dancers, Pylon and R.E.M. Just up Wilkerson Street is the old railroad trestle featured on the cover of R.E.M.'s album Murmur.

R.E.M. instantly brought the crowd of roughly 6,000 people at Chastain Park to its feet Sunday night with the rocker ''Lotus'' from the band's latest album ''Up'' and kept fans on the edge of their seats all night long. On a stage bristling with Dada-esque candy-colored neon shapes, the threesome that is now R.E.M. -- lead singer Michael Stipe, bass player Mike Mills and guitarist Peter Buck -- played the crowd like a band of snake charmers, for two hours walking the line between infectious rock energy and a more moody darkness that typifies R.E.M.'s music at its finest. The concert began as dusk overcame the warm, late-August afternoon. Athens band Elf Power took the stage about 8 p.m. and warmed up the crowd with its Mardi Gras parade-like atmosphere. The funny hats, unusual instruments and unpredictable songs certainly gave the largely 30- and 40-something crowd a memorable performance. R.E.M. took the stage before 9 p.m., with Mills in his typical glittery rock-star garb, Stipe gyrating like a runway model in a wind tunnel and Buck in a frenzy on guitar, literally kicking up his heels. They were accompanied by the three musicians who have been present for all of this tour (and the making of ''Up'') -- Joey Waronker on drums, Scott McCaughey on guitar and Ken Stringfellow on keyboards. With six musicians and at least 30 pieces of large-scale neon, the stage was full and the mood aggressive as the band walked a tightrope of sorts. The show was the band's first before a hometown crowd since the departure of original drummer Bill Berry in 1997. The confusion created by that absence, apparent in earlier shows without Berry such as the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington, D.C., and the Bridge Concert in San Francisco, was gone. It was replaced by a heady mix of unpredictable moods and songs. The tour continues at Chastain tonight, and for those who aren't able to make it, Atlanta radio station 99X (WNNX-FM 99.7) will broadcast the performance live. Athens band Olivia Tremor Control opens. On opening night, the band was clearly happy to be in Atlanta. ''We got to sleep in our own beds and bathe in our own bathtubs,'' Stipe said after the band romped through ''What's the Frequency Kenneth?'' from the album ''Monster.'' He added that while these were good reasons to be home, he could think of several thousand better reasons why it was good to be back in Georgia, ''most of them right here,'' he said, indicating the crowd. As has been noted in the reviews of R.E.M.'s shows all over the world on this summer's tour, the band has been reaching way back in its catalog and mixing old songs with the new. It had the interesting effect of both pleasing the fans and underscoring the fact that Berry is no longer with the band. Sunday night's show included ''Pilgrimage'' from ''Murmur,'' ''Finest Worksong,'' ''It's the End of the World'' and ''The One I Love'' from ''Document,'' ''Cuyahoga'' from ''Life's Rich Pageant,'' ''Nightswimming'' from ''Automatic For the People,'' as well as super-hits like ''Losing My Religion'' from ''Out of Time'' and a wide assortment of songs from the latest albums ''New Adventures in Hi-Fi'' and ''Up.'' Midway through the show, after dedicating ''Find the River'' from ''Automatic For the People'' to ''our friend Bill,'' the crowd began chanting ''Bill, Bill, Bill'' and Berry himself came on stage, greeted with wild applause from the audience and exaggerated hugs from Mills, Stipe and Buck. After briefly acknowledging the crowd, Berry, seeming to be almost overcome, walked offstage. It was, as one fan commented, a ''Spinal Tap'' moment. After the excitement died down, Mills said, ''How the &*#$ do we play a song after that?'' The answer, said Stipe, was to dedicate the next song to ''our friend Bill.'' The crowd laughed and the band played ''At My Most Beautiful,'' one of the most genuinely sweet love songs the band has ever written, from ''Up.'' The band also unveiled a new song titled ''The Great Beyond'' that was written for an upcoming and, according to Stipe, ''brilliant'' film, directed by Milos Forman, about the life of 1970s comedian Andy Kaufman. ''I've been ripping off Andy Kaufman for years and years, and after this movie comes out, everyone's gonna know that 'Hey, that guy's been ripping him off,' '' Stipe admitted good-naturedly before launching into ''Man On the Moon'' from ''Automatic for the People,'' which also happens to be the name of the film. Other highlights included the band's first rendition of ''Nightswimmming'' from ''Automatic For the People'' during this tour and Stipe atop a stool strumming an acoustic guitar for a careful and emotive solo rendition of ''Hope'' from ''Up.'' The band dispensed with most of the charade of an encore, took a brief respite from the stage, and then played right up to the 11 p.m. music curfew. R.E.M. ended the show, appropriately, with ''It's The End of the World,'' from ''Document.'' Stipe walked the monitors at the edge of the stage like a tightrope and threw the microphone into the crowd for a bit, and the rest of the band played like madmen. The crowd was absolutely wild. It wasn't the old R.E.M. that many Athenians remember, but nevertheless, they rocked.

This show often brings me back to my days of searching out bootlegs on the Northside of Chicago. There was a great store called Video Beat on Clark Street about a block or so north of Diversey which had a great selection of VHS Bootlegs. The original broadcast of this show which was abbreviated from this version had a small interview with Michael Stipe which has been cut from the full length version of this. However, I still rate it as my all time favorite video of R.E.M. It captured the band at a particular moment in history where they could have remained "Cult Heroes" or "Name Brand Superstars".
This show was during the Reconstruction tour, after an album that many in the band felt almost broke them up. One of the things that always fascinated me about the early videos of R.E.M. was the different characters Michael would play onstage. Compare this video with the Passaic Show from 1984 you get a completely different Stipe onstage, one that was much more shy and hid behind his hair. Even some of the videos from 1985 showed Stipe doing different poses. The Alabmahalle abbreviated video from a couple days later shows a much more subdued Stipe. Even going back further in the year, the May 1985 video from Raleigh, North Carolina shows Stipe in his hobo phase, in some places completely ignoring the antics of the fans. As I came to love the Rockpalast Video, I have realized that it is just one face of the band. As I have collected the bootlegs and shows, its the collection of these different faces which truly makes the R.E.M. live experience such a joyous adventure. Most of all, what R.E.M. did in Rockpalast was sell a very sedate crowd into R.E.M. This show was in Germany which happened to be the second such time the band had visited Germany and thus the crowd did not have a wealth of knowledge about the band. That is what a live show should be about.

One of the world's biggest-selling bands, REM, have played only their UK gig of the year, performing in front of just 200 invited guests - but an audience of millions. The group, who hail from Athens, Georgia, played in the UK before a small studio audience at the BBC's Broadcasting House, in central London. Those listening were supplemented by a BBC Radio 1 audience as the concert was broadcast live by the network. BBC Radio 1 is one of the most popular networks in the UK with a brief to play 'new' music. It pitches itself at at those aged from their teens to their mid-20s. This landmark UK show was a first in several ways, not least because REM will performed for the first time as a trio, after the departure of drummer Bill Berry. Following life-saving neurosurgery, he decided to leave the band. In commerical terms, the band are more or less unmatched. They have sold more than 35 million albums and released them at a steady rate averaging one every 18 months. Now comes their latest offering, Up. Work on the songs had already begun when Mr Berry left. When the band last embarked on a major tour, in 1995, they were beset by problems. Mr Berry was rushed offstage suffering from an aneurysm. Dates were postponed and when the band resumed, bass player Mike Mills had to be hospitalised for an abdominal operation. Within weeks singer Michael Stipe needed treatment for a hernia. It was the prospect of touring with a new album which prompted Berry to quit a year ago. But this time round the band decided to embark on a set of dates which would allow maximum exposure, giving radio and television performances in cities such as Hamburg and Vienna. Two days prior they recorded a session for John Peel.

A little context here: 11 Days before this show, President Reagan was shot by 25-year-old John Hinckley, the son of a wealthy oil exec, to impress Jodie Foster. This live performance of Rockville has none of the drunken twang of the album version. Or should we say that the album version is nowhere near as much fun as this one? Great Pre-Murmur recording of early R.E.M. Approx. 2 years before Murmur. Tyrone's burned down in 1982 and the sign pictured is now hanging at the 40 Watt Club.

Michael Stipe was speaking at his band, R.E.M.'s one-off date to celebrate the birthday of the Institute Of Contemporary Arts [ICA] held at the Royal Albert Hall this week. After the comment, R.E.M. performed Losing My Religion. They played a short set as part of four acts including openers Foals, The Duke Spirit and Robyn Hitchcock. All profits from this show goes to the ICA.
R.E.M. chose this show, broadcast by BBC Radio Two on March 25, 2008, to showcase their latest album, Accelerate. Already spoken of by music critics as a return to the indie sound of Out Of Time and the harder slice of life of Murmur. Is it enough to motivate a new generation? R.E.M. put on a great show. Losing My Religion came across as caustic and dark. Stipe sounds relaxed and was talkative. Perhaps some of Patti Smith's stage moves have rubbed off. All the songs seemed speeded up which is great. R.E.M. are a rock band after all. Accelerate seems like the album R.E.M. had to make in a world like today's. Their contemporaries from the original indie scene have all faded. Lost. It will be harder to start a movement to change society now. People are so disenchanted with politics. But as in all movements, it has to start with one man, then one group of men. It looks like [from the song titles of the new album], R.E.M. are taking a tentative first step, making the connection between real life and their music to try to find the way again. The final song of the encore has yet to be broadcast.

When I'm in the mood to hear a great early R.E.M. show -- one that best recalls the days of seeing them in a small, crowded, sweaty club, but with a setlist full of original (now classic) tunes and on the very cusp of breaking bigger -- I return again and again to this one, recorded at Larry's Hideaway in Toronto in July of 1983. It's not a perfect tape by any means. In fact -- and be warned -- there are a few brief cuts, some diginoise and other glitches here and there. But even with a flaw or two, this tape is spectacular -- a great band, at a thrilling time in their career, and on a particularly inspired night. From the chiming arpeggios pouring out of Peter's Rickenbacker, to Mike Mills' dextrous, innovative basslines, to Michael Stipe's singular baritone and oblique poeticism, the R.E.M. machine is firing here in all its early, post-punk glory. And, as I always tell people who've come to the band fairly recently, just listen to the mighty Bill Berry on this tape. He is the engine driving this train, and his rapid-fire playing on this night (as usual) is a marvel. I don't know how else to say it -- these guys were, and still are, something else. I may not have been at this particular show, but I was at countless others just like it. How freaking lucky am I?

Here’s another one from the request queue, this one from a while back in the short-lived forums and I can’t for the life of me remember who requested it. If you’re out there whoever you are, sorry for the wait! :-) REM for me falls into the same category as the Talking Heads: listened to and enjoyed but not central to my musical space. That being said, I have heard that the band from Athens, Georgia is one of the best live acts out there if you can get to see them, and this show from Paris in ’84 certainly has it goin’ on. Recorded for radio during their 1984 European tour in support of their second album, Reckoning, but never broadcast this tape is a bit of a legend in REM live trading circles and at least a couple of tracks—”9-9” and “Gardening At Night”—have been officially released (and so are not in this archive, though there is more than enough for a single disc!). The sound quality changes from the first encore, “Second Guessing” to the end with the high end being rolled way back and I’m not sure why as the track listings have the reel change happening during “20th Century Boy”. Perhaps the encores are from a different source? Still sounds good but caveat auditor and all that so I’ve included linked samples from early and late in the show.

In a summer of uncommonly gorgeous settings for R.E.M. concerts (Bilbao, Lyon, Verona, Locarno, and Dresden immediately come to mind), last night's outside Udine (in the far northeastern corner of Italy), stood out in its unique beauty: the show was in the huge interior courtyard of a centuries' old manor house that now houses Friuli's exceptional contemporary art museum. The crowd and band certainly responded to the soft summer night in such a splendid setting with an amazing concert that included some little-played favorites like Turn You Inside Out, Nightswimming and Sitting Still (and End of the World popped up again, as it has done a few times now in Europe). And I'm Gonna DJ and Supernatural, placed early in the set rather than at the end, worked great and really got the crowd going. Fun, loud, exuberant night and what a place-- Fruili was new to us, and quite a revelation. Now we are in Milan for a day off after quite a few miles traversing pretty much every corner of Italy . . . . well, except for the far west, but we will be in Torino on the second leg (27th Sept). Tomorrow night a soldout Arena Civica, a cool intown stadium where we have never played, awaits. And Milanese fans are always among the best crowds of any tour. (check out this really cool digital fanzine compiled by Virgin Radio Italy to which our good friend Gianni Sibilla contributed in commemoration of the band's Milan concert)...And on Sunday we finish this initial sprint through Europe with the band's second appearance at the beloved Paleo Festival in Nyon, near Geneva. But a lot of great shows remain in the ensuing months starting with the Frequency Festival in Salzburg on August 14th, then favorite places Budapest and Prague the middle weekend of August, on to more German shows and UK, Scandinavia and the Baltics over the next several weeks, all the way to Istanbul and beyond by early October. Anyway, the band is playing better than ever, the changes from night to night keep returning fans, and there seem to be a lot of those this time, guessing and surprised. One programming note: Virgin Radio UK is broadcasting last week's standout show in Dresden, recorded and mixed by the estimable Brett Eliason, this coming Sunday night worldwide (LINK here for details) between 7pm and 10pm UK on Sunday Night Live with Ben Jones. REM frontman Michael Stipe paid tribute to Heath Ledger during the band's rousing set at South by Southwest tonight. Stipe dedicated the new song 'Until The Day Is Done' to the actor, who passed away in January. "This is dedicated to Heath Ledger, who loved this song," he said, ending the song by shouting, "Goodbye Heath, we loved you!" During their 90-minute set at Stubb's Bar-B-Q, the veteran Athens rockers previewed nearly every song from their forthcoming album 'Accelerate', which is due out in April. They began the night by launching into the first two songs off the album, 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' and 'Man Sized Wreath'. "We're gonna do a bunch of new songs and we hope that you like them," Stipe told the packed house. "The good news is most of them are under two-and-a-half minutes so if you don't like them you can have a pee break or grab a beer," he quipped. Looking dapper in a black suit and green scarf, Stipe interacted with the adoring crowd throughout the night, calling out to friends in the audience and praising Austin for supporting US presidential candidate Barack Obama. REM also played some older tunes, including 'Fall On Me', 'Electrolite' and 2000 hit single 'The Great Beyond', which Stipe said he chose to add to their setlist even though the band hadn't rehearsed it in a couple of years. While introducing a trio of politically charged new tunes, Stipe said, "I'm terrified at how history will look back at the overreacting of the current administration to 9/11. We have a little less than two years to make something more of this decade," and the crowd cheered loudly in response.

Last night: the long awaited R.E.M. concert. Beautiful venue and the rain stopped just before the concert. Amazing music, never tire of it, makes me feel "home" whatever that means. The crowd was a bit boring though, some people even seemed to take offence that we were shouting and dancing .... ! And was amazed at how "old" the majority of the people were, me included ...
Damn, the first time i saw R.E.M. was in Werchter in , what 1993? or 1994? Don´t remember. that was a life defining moment for me. That wonderful strange feeling from then came back slowly last night and when the last song "man on the moon" began, something in me seemed to explode, i was singing and dancing and shouting my lungs out, and found that i had tears in my eyes. thanks R.E.M. Music that opens eyes.

In 1987, Frampton's career enjoyed a tremendous surge when he was invited by David Bowie to play lead guitar on the latter's Glass Spider World Tour. Peter had competition for that lead-guitar spot from Carlos Alomar, Bowie's faithful six-stringer who solos on 'Fashion' and 'Scary Monsters'. Frampton isn't used to sharing the stage with any guitarist, lead or otherwise. It also helped that Richard Cottle, one of Bowie's keyboardists, played on Frampton's 'Premonition' and toured with him in 1986 and 1998; and bassist Carmine Rojas worked with Frampton on some unreleased songs from the 'Premonition' sessions. classicbands.com

I don't wanna brag about my punk rock "bona fides", but, well, just to brag a little, I was acutally at the Clash concert where the cover picture for this album was taken (at the old New York Palladium, since demolished for a NYU dormitory!). Of course, this album hadn't come out yet, but at that concert, the Clash did many of the songs that were featured on this album, as well as the then better known songs from their first album. London Calling became a classic and is rightly considered so today. Still, I don't know if i'd call it "punk". The Clash were already becoming poppier by this time, which is OK. This record showed a great variety of styles (as well as a good deal of pretensiousness that overcame a lot of punk groups as they got past their first album). The Clash could pull it off, tho, unlike many of their contemporaries. The Clash was the first punk group I ever really "got into". I found their first record, when it was still available as an import-only, in the Discomat store in Grand Central Station way back in 1978, and, along with the Stooges "Funhouse" (then also only available as an import) changed my whole way of thinking about rock & roll music. I had finally found something in the whole wretched mess of 1970s music that I could listen to. While everyone else I knew was listening to Styx, Foreigner, Toto, Boston, ELP, Yes (!!!), and I was holding my nose and trying not to puke, along came The Clash and eventually that whole long-haired mascara stained music scene went crashing into well deserved oblivion. Eventually, I came to like other groups (Wire, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Flipper, Mission of Burma and, especially, The Fall) better than the Clash, it WAS the Clash that showed me the true path. I still consider the import version of their first album their true masterpiece. London Calling was very good, and for a while I listened to it constantly, and it is well worth buying. It is a studio album, but in a way it is such a summing up of that period, that it is almost like being there in person at a live event. Tho it is not dated, and it stands the test of time, it will still take you back to your teen age years (if you were a teenager in 1979). BTW, the tickets for those historic Clash concerts at the Palladium cost about 10 bucks--including the teletron charges. I bought the tickets at the teletron at J&R Music world when it was still only a basement record shop, years before it became the super mega electronics and computer store it is today.

When the show let out, we were all standing in the street, still in semi-shock as to what a great gig it was. I happened to look up at the Aragon . . if you look at the picture of the venue, there’s these little windows up high. Leaning out were Joe and Mick, looking at the crowd and Chicago with huge grins on their faces, like a couple of kids at Christmas. Joe turns and looks at me across the street, we exchange grins and waves and thumbs up and off he goes. Man, I miss that guy. Thanks for the memory. -Paul from Chicago

I first saw THe ClASh 26 years ago at The Aragon Ballroom 1979 I was 12 years old. My Mom helped me sneek in without a ticket got me past the door by saying I just wanted to buy a t-shirt..........once in I was gone up the stairs never to be seen until the end of the show while my parents waited for 2 hours in the car........... then again in 1982 same venue I was a sophomore in high school. The greatest band ever!!

The Clash - France 1981

Although not one of the best performances from the tour, this CD is a great place to check out the developing new arrangements on this tour of the Sandinista songs and the variations on the older songs in soundboard hifi quality.
London Calling fades in at its start to begin the CD. A good performance but with Mick’s solo too far back in the mix, a feature of this tour. Safe European Home and The Leader are both fine performances. “And now we have Mr Mick Jones” and the afore mentioned duly picks out the intro to a powerful Somebody Got Murdered with committed vocals and playing from Mick and some great drum fills from Topper. The sound improves in the left channel early on in White Man In Hammersmith Palais. An excellent performance only marred by Mick’s ineffective solo. “You better watch the Guns of Brixton are going to crash you” intros Joe with its new arrangement heard very clearly here. The audience are markedly less lively than at Paris the night before. Joe tries to understand the shouts from the audience but although he tries hard with his pigeon French tonight he proves again that his Spanish was much better than his French! Topper then starts up a solo drum intro, Joe comes in but then breaks off, and a still rather ragged performance of Lightning Strikes proceeds. Its wing and a prayer stuff with Lightning Strikes on this tour with the band improvising each night with Joe struggling with the mass of lyrics and changes to the rhythm. Much more familiar territory next for a powerful “Un chanson de 1958” I Fought The Law ending with Joe screaming “But the fuckin’ law won!” Joe then announces amusingly “I would now like to sing for a change” before an excellent performance of Corner Soul. It is tight and committed with Mick’s guitar fills effective and inventive, certainly one of the highlights of this CD.
There is an edit, which restarts into the beginning of Ivan Meets GI Joe that still sounds ragged and ineffective with Topper getting the lyrics jumbled. Joe has the same problem during Radio Clash singing at one point “I got the words wrong!” It’s an enjoyable performance the band delivering an extended improvised ending. Joe adlibs over the ending of a fine Charlie Don’t Surf suggesting the audience don’t like it and no doubt many in the audience would be struggling with these unfamiliar Clash fayre. Back to more typical Clash energy and attack next with an excellent Magnificent Seven, which just lacks an inspired rant from Joe to make it exceptional! Joe sounds tired and pissed off asking, “Where’s Junco Partner?” but as if to lift their own spirits the band play a soulful, almost mournful, slowed down Bankrobber, another definite highlight. At one point the music drops down and Joe just whispers the lyrics hoping to hear the “Ooh’s” backing from the audience, after a few seconds he is duly rewarded and thanks the audience. The variations in the new arrangement of Wrong ‘Em Boyo are well evidenced here but tonight’s performance is somewhat lacking in fire. The recording sadly ends with Train In Vain, now a little slower, more soulful performance than in 1980.

The Clash - Bond International Casino

The recording starts as a fine London Calling is counted in with plenty of ‘controlled feedback’ from Mick. The sound is a little flatter than usual but soon picks up. Next Safe European Home blasts in and Mick plays around interestingly to begin with his guitar parts on the end section but then seems to lose interest. The band are still in the process of warming up on The Leader but are responding to another very noticeably enthusiastic and noisy Bonds audience. Train In Vain is brought back again to its 4th position in the set and there is a change in the arrangement (and in later gigs) with an extended instrumental break after “..speak to me”. During this tonight Mick speaks to the audience but his words are unclear. The audience are very appreciative and before a fine White Man In Hammersmith Palais Joe responds with a pleased “Yeah, yeah, yeah…it was like a morgue in here last night – attack, attack, attack!” Joe as usual adlibs over the final section but his words sadly are unclear due to the sound quality limitations. An extended This Is Radio Clash is followed by the return of Corner Soul and then Guns of Brixton; all fine performances but unexceptional. The Call Up tonight though is inspired. It’s preceded by Joe’s “Any minute now the drums will play” and Mick’s firework sounding effects are prominent but effective. It’s a very fine performance, tighter and more spirited than most of the earlier Bond’s performances of this underrated live Clash song. It’s straight in then to a fine Bankrobber and then Joe asks the audience, “come on lets have some encouragement” and certainly gets it, the audience going wild for a stunning (at Bonds now recharged and reworked), Complete Control. There is an extra long teased out start, and the band really tear into the song, Mick’s solo verges on the histrionic, and when the song ends abruptly, the audience roar their approval. An edit begins the 2nd CD with Joe adlibbing over the beginning of Lightning Strikes “lightning strikes at random, random”. Mick adds some great guitar, the band in strong form, and Joe adlibs aplenty (although largely unclear). A fine Ivan Meets GI Joe next and then Charlie Don't Surf with a lengthy intro, “into the darkness”, Mick’s improvised guitar work here though is less effective. Magnificent Seven tonight is shorter but very tight, powerful and effective; “keep your eyes on front, keep your eyes straight ahead”. Broadway appropriately gets its live debut at Bonds, with the same arrangement as later performances. Mick’s guitar fills are great and inventive but an abrupt ending shows the arrangement live is not quite worked out yet. “Its time to work” shouts Joe before Somebody Got Murdered, which builds from a very slow intro into a very good performance. Career Opportunities is dropped from the set and replaced by Police and Thieves with a new intro; Topper plays the drum intro but Mick now plays the melody over the top as Topper keeps the drum rolls going before the usual reggae chords kick in. Whether intentional or not its very effective, the band continuing to reinvigorate songs that had been staples in previous live sets. Mick’s playing is inventive and improvised but as previously at times tonight more interesting than especially memorable. Next Clampdown crashes in with Mick again improvising around his usual guitar intro. Joe’s (and Mick’s) vocals are impassioned and Joe rants powerfully over Topper’s drumming over the suitably climactic finale to the song and the main set. An edit begins the first encore with as usual One More Time, which has a lengthy Topper intro as presumably the rest of the band return to the stage, and then finally Joe’s rhythm guitar comes in. There’s no Mick guitar sound to begin with so either a sound problem or Mick has not made it back from the dressing room! There is a lengthy instrumental gap mid song but Mick’s crucial contribution to the song is somewhat lacking so it is not a memorable performance. An edit before Brand New Cadillac brings a better performance and an improvement in sound, fuller bass but distance problems remain. A further edit before Washington Bullets and the sound now is noticeably louder, fuller and clearer, this is the best sound on the recording and continues through to the end. There is lots of cheering mid song as presumably the El Salvador leaflets are released from the ceiling onto the audience. Tonight’s speech from the El Salvadorian is mostly unclear but Mick’s playing here is some of the most inventive and enjoyable tonight. It’s straight into then an impassioned Janie Jones to bring the encore to a close. An edit before the second encore, which begins with Armagideon Time. Joe adlibs aplenty during a strong performance with Mick’s playing and effects particularly enjoyable. A shorter concert than those previously ends in fine style as Joe screams New York's Burning and the band then tear through London’s Burning.

Saw the Clash at the beautiful Akron Civic Theatre in Akron, Ohio! My only chance to ever meet (Well, shout "aaarrrgggbblllluurrggbllblblb...PAUL!! TERRY!!! MICK!!! JOE!!!") the band as they shuffled in one at a time from the alley to they backstage door. Highlights for me....At the opening of the show with London Calling watching EVERYONE in the theater, including a mad rush of folks down out of the balcony, rush the stage and Mick going off on his little guitar riff in Know Your Rights and Ned and his Firebird that he had been rebuilding for eons and it was the first night on the road for it, breaking down upon our return and if I'm not mistaken, never to run again.

JOE STRUMMER'S Clash--the best new band of the year? Well, some would claim as much. At least you can guarantee that any band formed by the 101ers guitarist will bristle with fire and energy. Unfortunately at the Roundhouse the Clash had little more on offer. The Ramones out of an East End squat? Indeed, many of the leather-clad Strummer's new songs were little more than rewrites of this years punk classics. But 'I've Got A Crush On You', 'Janie Jones', and the apocalyptic 'London's Burning' proved there was still power in Strummer's right arm. Unfortunately however, the warmth and love of the old pub rocking 101ers has been traded for a new aggression and belligerence. At 6 o'clock on a Sunday evening, long before the bar opened, the Roundhouse audience wasn't in the most receptive of moods. The more they sat down, the more Strummer screamed at them to stand up. It was a brave, if bitter attempt to instil some kind of occasion into the weekly Roundhouse rock and roll binge, but it was not appreciated. There was no disaffection when the Crazy Cavan and the Rhythm Rockers hit the stage. The Welsh band's normal entourage of drape-jacketed, crepe-soled teds were conspicuous by their absence but Crazy Cavan's characteristic brand of authentic rockabilly brought out dancers all the same. From 'Teddy Boy Rock and Roll' and 'Little Sadie', to a selection of Little Richard and Chuck Berry classics you can rely on Crazy Cavan every time. Only the hair oil is changed.
The Kursaal Flyers, on the other hand, come straight from the studio where they've been recording for CBS under the watchful eye of Wombler Mike Batt. The new album, tentatively titled The Golden Mile, is scheduled for October release but already the Kursaal Flyers are promoting it.

The Cranberries - Thoughts That Linger

During a lengthy performance Thursday at the Universal Amphitheatre, the sextet showed its true colors: When everything is said and done, the Cranberries are nothing more or less than a decent, good old-fashioned rock-and-roll band. Giving new meaning to the words "spunky elf," diminutive singer Dolores O'Riordan delighted the audience with her slightly eccentric wardrobe, manic marching across the stage and focused delivery of the band's impressive catalog. Although the group offered a judicious sample from its four albums (including the brand-new "Bury the Hatchet"), songs from the 1993 debut are still the most-fully realized. Tunes such as "Dreams," "Linger" and "Pretty" strike a perfect balance between caramel-smooth melody and vigorous rock beat. The crowd's eyes were always on O'Riordan, but the band is enthusiastically democratic in its overall sound. Drums, guitars and keyboards blend to create a crackling mix in which no instrument monopolizes attention. During the encore, a white grand piano was elevated on stage and O'Riordan sang the melancholy "Dying in the Sun." It was a moment of intense vulnerability that left you pining for more.

'Acoustic Christmas' (short title: 'Acoustic X-Mas') is an annual concert run by the Los Angeles, California radio station KROQ.
Since its inception in 1990, the concert has attracted increasingly popular alternative rock bands and singers. It takes place over a weekend in mid-December, and has in recent years been broadcast for free on KROQ's web site.
In 1999, a compilation of live recordings, ''The Best of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas'', was released.

Buy his one official, full studio album, Grace, and thank me later. Buckley live was always a gamble. No doubt he would put his all into the show but his beautiful voice was often either flat or sharp. When he was on, he was on though. This is one of those nights. Not his best setlist or the best sound quality but we can deal. Expect to see a good amount of Mr. Buckley on here. Included into Hallelujah is his cover of the Smith's I Know It's Over. Great stuff.

Although many of my musical heroes died much too soon, only two of them threaten to choke me up whenever I think of them. One is Elliott Smith, who I'm sure we'll get to at some point in this series. The other is Jeff Buckley. Grace was nothing less than a revelation to me in 1994. Suddenly, and seemingly out of nowhere, there was this guy who wrote exquisite songs, could rock like Zeppelin, could melt even the steeliest resolve with a romantic ballad, and had the sweetest, most angelic voice I had ever heard. It was a stunning, near-perfect debut by an immense talent, it positively blew me away, and it was exciting to consider the prospect of watching Jeff grow and evolve, and to imagine the decades of great music that were surely in front of him. Then came that horrible week in May of '97 when he disappeared while swimming in Memphis, then turned up dead a few days later. I remember precisely where I was when I got the news, and again, I get rattled just thinking about it. But less talk, more Jeff. Here's his tremendous turn at the Glastonbury Festival in June of '95, as recorded by the BBC. It's an exceptional tape, and the setlist is heavy on songs from Grace (which means it's great), with a then-unreleased song ("What Will You Say") and an MC5 cover tossed in for good measure. If only I had dozens or hundreds more Jeff Buckley shows, recorded over all the years since, to have to weed through and choose from. But even if I did, I bet this one would still be tough to top.

Jeff Buckley - Fall In Light

I probably have about 8 versions of "Lover, You Should've Come Over" by now. Why the hell did I need the one on here? Because, as it turns out, it's unlike any other version I own. Much more soulful, even playful, with Buckley improvising new lyrics. Turns out there's no definitive version of a Jeff Buckley song, beyond acknowledging that the most vital instrument is his voice, ergo it must be one by the man himself. I've heard "Lover" and "Grace" (here played with Gary Lucas, in a very different way to every other version I'm aware of) in many subtly different guises, and it's clear that they grow with the man. I've heard the same is true of Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue", if you trace the bootleg history. What sets this bootleg apart is that Buckley's playing with Sweetheart material here, too, giving us a version of "Everybody Here Wants You" that sounds basically nothing like the album version. "Jewel Box" is introduced as being "Song 21", and "Yard Of Blonde Girls" is called, uh, "Very Sexy", and has 'Billy Corgan distortion'. That's how new the material was at his point. It's fascinating - like seeing high school photographs of your favourite celebrities. The covers are saved until the final 5 tracks, all of which are from different shows, and all of which have signifcantly lower sound quality. "I Know It's Over" is wonderful; "Hymn A L'amour" slightly boring; "Let Time Stand Still" is free of Buckley's guitar and sounds not unlike the Live At Sin-E version of "Be My Wife"; "All Tomorrow's Parties" is slightly more folky than the original, but just as majestic; and "Wild is The Wind" is so badly recorded it's hard to make out exactly what's going on. A mixed bag, then. you don't need me to tell you that this is just for Buckley fanatics/completists. If that's you, then look out for this; it's a notch above most bootlegs about for interest alone.

Firstly, it was wild to have a band like Joy Division In a Youth Club !!...but my main memories are of first seeing Ian Curtis start dancing .. he really scared me .. I wondered what was wrong with him !! Then, after I'd walked around the room shooting various angles of the gig I ended up actually on the low stage with them (Wow to think I've stood on the same stage as Ian Curtis!!) ... I got behind Curtis and Hooky, and Hooky told me to fuck off! I was so proud that I'd been told to Fuck off by one of Joy Division !! ... Years later I photographed Hooky again for my local newspaper, and reminded him of that time ... He interrupted me by saying "I told you to Fuck off!" ... and then two years ago, at one of the events marking the 25th anniversary of Curtis' death, I finally asked Hooky for an autograph. He wrote ... "I told you to Fuck off!" ... Brilliant!

The sleeve notes make it plain: This is "just a gig by one of the greatest bands that ever lived and wrote and played." This gig, taped at the Warehouse in Preston, took place during the final round of UK dates Joy Division was to play before jetting off to the US. PRESTON 28 FEBRUARY 1980 is a truly awesome and atmospheric record, and though it's a warts-and-all document, it almost revels in the technical difficulties the band had with the sound system. At one moment, Ian Curtis even declares that "everything's falling apart!" "The Eternal" is a truly electric secular hymn with arching synthesiser chords while "Transmission" and "Warsaw" are frenetic and impassioned punk. The crowd was clearly having a good time and unwittingly witnessing a very special event. During a hiatus, a girl opportunely announces "Anyone from Burnley? The coach is going in five minutes!" Joy Division's very last gig, in May 1980, was also recorded (just two weeks before Ian Curtis' unexpected suicide) and released as the album STILL. This Preston recording though is a more concise and accessible album that fittingly ends brilliantly, and ironically, on "She's Lost Control," a definite high.

Ian, most unusually, was very talkative on stage, primarily to fill in the time while order was restored by the roadies (they had some PA problems due to interference with the beer pump!!). Despite the problems, or because of them, the tape of this concert is probably one of the most interesting bootlegs.

The very special of the show is, that a weird saxophone player is on stage and played with Bauhaus "Hollow Hills" and "Dancing" ,I saw a lot of Bauhaus shows, but never a show with a saxophone player. The entire show is coined/shaped by force and noise. No more to say for this show, enjoy it ,it`s another document of history in early Gothic days.

They Came from Northampton: Bauhaus in jeans and tennis shoes shock

We went to interview Bauhaus after their recording of a session for Peter Powell early this year [1980] . The interview was something of a washout , not being helped by KYPP mobile recording studio which records and mixes interviews below the ability of the human ear to hear. So hear it is as remembered by our derring do reporter who rung the rags of his flu-wracked brain to remember what questions he asked and what they replied. Bauhaus spoke to me after a day of unsuccessfully trying to record a session. I must report in accord with KYPP policy of sickening honesty that they did not speak to me from their coffins, nor did they call me from Vienna, they looked pretty ordinary apart from their professionally peculiar guitarist Danny Ashman...

Q: What do you see as your main purpose?
A: Well to have fun mainly, of course. To continue our little experiments... The Flat Field is about boredom really.
Q: Terror Couple Kill Colonel might seem to be about the RAF (German variety) especially with the newspaper clippings quoted in it.
A: No, it is about the IRA! Or rather it is about the way newspapers tend to trivialise importnat subjects and sensationalise unimportant ones. The track [also a single] is a precis of an article about the killing of a British Colonel in Germany by the IRA that had the catchy title of the headline. It was a tiny piece rubbing shoulders and god knows what else witha whole page of assorted trivia. tits and arse.
Q: Tell us about your reason for recording Rose Garden Funeral of Sores [Thorns] (B side of latest single).
A: The lyrical content and mood of the John Cale track fits in with the genral diseased scheme of things. Cale's great.
Q: What do you feel about the currently hyped London bands, Spandau and their scene? You did play Billy's which was part of the scene?
A:I f we popularised the scene then it wasn't by our own design at all. Billy's was just somewhere to play. We have never associated ourselves within any particular scene . The only affinity we have with any movement, is in the original spirit of punk. .. We don't feel ourselves to be part of the Blitz scene. That goes for glam rock as well.
Q: Could you expand on the subjects mentioned by the group in the KICK interview I.E. 'Sexual energy is vital' 'Primeval magick is not planned' ?
A: Sexual energy, the electrical energy that sparks, is vital to the group's approach, especially on stage. It is the energy that runs like an undercurrent through a good performance. If it is not there or if it is weak , then the performance will be weak as well. It needs to be present when recording as well. The primeval magick mentioned is connected with this. It is the spontaneous energy contained in a record or a live gig that makes the thing exciting , special atmosphere is important. The right atmosphere of a venue, studio, audience, climate can promote the magick. It is a question of chemical, electrical interaction, and reaction. It is hard to talk about it has to be sensed. Felt.

By the time they got to Baton Rouge, the Sex Pistols found themselves in a rut. How could they top the San Antonio Shoot-Out? They wouldn't come close tonight. The audience tonight was comprised mostly of college kids. Although there was still verbal warfare between the audience and the band, the performance at the Kingfish Club was much less assaultive than the show at Randy's the night before. Sid even got some play from a female fan during "New York." Most of the audience seemed fairly interested in the Sex Pistols' music, and "EMI" even inspired a sing-along. Nonetheless, apathy plagued the band. Steve seemed particularly bored tonight, introducing the songs without a shred of enthusiasm. The put-downs exchanged between Sid and members of the crowd sounded forced. Instead of throwing food and trash, the audience threw money. After getting hit with a handful of coins, John said, "If you're gonna throw money, throw dollar bills." During the encores, Sid and Johnny collected over 15 dollars. After the Kingfish show, Steve expressed his frustration by refusing to travel with the band on the tour bus.

During their show at Baton Rouge's Kingfisher Club in Louisiana, Vicious starts to have sex with a girl who gets on stage. The crowd shower the band with money; Vicious and Lydon pick up a welcome $15 after the gig. Interband relations are so bad that guitarist Steve Jones refuses to travel on the tour bus. He and drummer Paul Cook fly to the remaining shows.

"There isn't any extra information about this unofficial release either in the liner notes or on the interweb thing - however, as you listen it becomes obvious that this is indeed a recording of the rather short-lived lineup of Kraftwerk that includes Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger in its ranks! That's right - Neu! as part of Kraftwerk!!! "It's basically a whole CD of extended "side-long" jams in the style of the first Kraftwerk albums performed in front of a small but enthusiastic audience and broadcast on Bremen Radio in 1971. The members of Neu! really take a forward role here, with Rother's guitar driving things for most of the time and sounding quite rocking, with glimpses of his future soaring melodic sound in the extended jam passages. The guitar and drums are backed up by synth and I believe organ bass, with notable exceptions of flute taking the forefront on the great version of Ruckzack (from the first Kraftwerk LP) and is it distorted electric violin on K4? Maybe just Rother taking a violin bow to his guitar strings! Proto-Kraftwerk and proto-Neu! It's exciting stuff, and on top of that the sound quality is excellent - a professional radio recording. "How has this recording not become better known over the past 35 years since it was made?! I don't know. It appears to be a newly released CDR edition with good-quality (but privately printed) packaging. Maybe it has stayed in the Radio Bremen archives until now? If you're sceptical about the authenticity I'm sure a listen will persuade you... and hearing someone in the crowd shout "Michael!" in the last second of the recording is the icing on the cake." - Little Bear [who shared the recording on the internet]. This isn’t the motorik, some might even say monotonous, electronic sound of Kraftwerk. Early Kraftwerk were more experimental with sounds and effects - not quite dance music.

This show was pretty good. Maybe its because I watched the Under a Blood Red Sky video one too many times, but for me, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was the highlight. Somebody threw an Irish tricolor up on the stage, and during the breakdown, during what would have been the white flag part on the War tour, Bono tied the flag into a blindfold, and sang most of the rest of the song that way. Pretty intense. The other highlight was the Bono acoustic "So Cruel". There was blood on the tracks on that one. Really emotional, even in a dump like the Silverdome. Oh yeah, and Dana Carvey as Garth on beamed in on the MTV music awards for "Real Thing". My mom taped the MTV broadcast, and that looked pretty cool.

Quite easily the best concert that I have ever been to before or since. U2 were magical, one would never had guessed that so much would be coming up regarding the issues with Adam in Sydney later that week. The setlist was insprirational - and the footage on the mega screens was scintillating, but chilling all at once. The stadium was perfect for that size tour, and the weather was balmy all night. This concert literally changed my life!

The show was a dress rehearsal for a worldwide pay-per-view concert coming up 11 days later. The show was beamed to the home of a contest winner in Queensland, Aus., who interacted with the band on the vidiwalls.

U2 - This One Is For Us

A fitting farewell from the U2 boys to Tokyo, unfortunately lacking a warm up band and offering a set shorter than any of theirs I've seen before they still performed excellently, from the Japanese flag waving introduction of City of Blinding Lights through to the audio-visual assault of Vertigo at the end. Though it did look like Bono narrowly avoided a mishap with some pyrotechnics while wandering around on all fours blindfolded, a swift move from one of the roadies helped him out. They were gracious in their apologies for the time between visits and provided a solid set, with The First Time, Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own and the second rendition of Vertigo being the highlights (for me) of a highly lit show. Although their opening barrage of songs was outstanding and the often conservative response of the Japanese audience was completely disregarded in favour of an arena wide atmosphere of pure enjoyment. The two new songs were well executed and despite the slightly hurried feel of the two hour set they suited the slightly more intimate surroundings of an arena as opposed to the broad pomp and acoustic unfriendliness of the stadiium.
Outstanding. Wish I was going to Honolulu now.....

Bono (Paul Hewson) has said that, on its current tour, which included a May 3 stop at Gund Arena, U2 is applying for the job as the greatest rock group in the world. Not even the Rolling Stones and the Beatles had the gall to decree themselves the greatest -- they let others heap on the accolades. But aside from the unbelievable pretense involved in making such a claim, the problem with U2 is simply that its resume; hasn't been updated to fit the job description. Try as it might to go back to the basics, strip down its music to the core, and play more intimate venues (arenas instead of stadiums), U2 can't shake the fact that it's no longer a vital rock band. Put its Grammy-winning single "Beautiful Day" (from its most recent album, last year's All That You Can't Leave Behind) up against "New Year's Day" (from 1983's War), and you'll see the differences. The latter is a call to revolution; the former is an ode to complacency. "I believe in you," Bono sang to the crowd, the arena lights still lit for the opening notes of the first song, "Elevation." But this show wasn't about us; it was all about him. In one of the less subtle moments of the nearly two-and-a-half-hour affair, a series of squiggly lines on an electronic screen behind the stage came together briefly to read "Love me." During "Bullet the Blue Sky," Bono picked up a mobile spotlight and aimed it at the upper decks of the Gund, but by the end of the song, he was shining the light on his own face, making himself the real star. As much as he might have involved the audience (he gave one overly enthusiastic patron some stage time before the guy got evicted by security, and he later dragged a young woman onstage to dance with him during "Mysterious Ways"), Bono always returned to himself. And that's what this "Elevation" tour was about: not putting the band back in the pit with the fans (though Bono did take a run through the crowd at one point, a herd of bouncers in tow to shove fans out of the way), but getting the fans back into the band. Thankfully, he didn't adopt any of the satirical alter egos that he has on earlier tours. Three songs into the set, during a rendition of "Until the End of the World," he mugged for the photographers, clasped hands with the crowd, and engaged in a staged duel with guitarist the Edge All the while, strobe lights flashed incessantly to heighten the melodrama. While the setup was relatively simple (a heart-shaped catwalk stretched out onto the arena floor, and the stage devoid of props), the band still turned to artifice. A series of screens created larger-than-life shadows of Bono, and smoke pumped into the arena, so that it appeared at one point that the black-leather-jacket-clad singer was walking on clouds. And Bono never stopped moving: He ran sprints on the catwalk during "Where the Streets Have No Name" and stayed still only when he played acoustic guitar. After recalling a gig the band played some 20 years ago at the Agora, Bono introduced "New York" as a "paean to mortality." It was one of many sentimental moments that brought out the middle-aged, nostalgic-for-youth theme at the core of All That You Can't Leave Behind. The most daring political statements included a plea for stricter gun control (a video showed footage of Charlton Heston speaking out against gun control -- we were supposed to find his speech offensive, but the mixed reaction of the crowd suggested the message didn't get through) and an attempt to get audience members to write their congressmen about genocide in Africa. At one point, Bono said that the late Joey Ramone, to whom he paid tribute numerous times during the concert, would one day rest in peace at the Rock Hall, and he dedicated "One" to Rock Hall curator Jim Henke. For someone who was always concerned about the plight of the oppressed, Bono's concerns about his future as an aging rock icon suggested that he has turned the focus inward, and the results -- All That You Can't Leave Behind songs such as "Walk On," "Kite," and "In a Little While" -- were far less engaging than politically charged anthems such as "Pride (In the Name of Love)" and "Bad." The concert's high point was "I Will Follow," which U2 delivered with gusto. The band kept the momentum going with a fist-pumping rendition of "Sunday Bloody Sunday," but just as it was jamming and building up steam, Bono once again started working the crowd, and the show's energy started to wane. And when U2 returned to playing new material with "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," it turned to the kind of empty sloganeering that's so typical of All That You Can't Leave Behind. Funny how quickly elevation can turn to deflation, even in the hands of the greatest rock band in the world.

U2 ended their PopMart tour with the best concert of the tour, of that I'm sure! I saw the show in Cape Town, and if that is what a standard show is like, the Johannesburg show was in a totally different league. The crowd seemed to be a bit sleepy, with Bono not getting the participation he hoped for, but U2 made up for whatever the crowd lacked. In his speech before I still have not found, Bono thanked us, the crew, he thanked U2 for letting him be in their band and he a also thanked God. Where the streets have no name, was done at its ultimate best, with Bono shouting at the end over and over again - "I can die now!" When the lemon opened it was full of balloons and streamers with the band all drinking champagne - what a sight! And then of course there was the final song, something which I will never forget. At the end of One, I waited for MLK or Can't help falling in love to start, but then Edge started playing a beautiful sequence on the guitar, at first I did not know what it was because I was not expecting it at all, but when Bono started with the first verse I realised that they were actually playing "40." It was a sight I will never forget, with Adam and Larry standing on the front of the stage, Bono singing and Edge playing!

Saturday night i was rather deaf and got in bed @ 2am - but sooooooo excited. A dream came true. There's this ultra marathon in South Africa - 90 kilometres (60 miles?). Once the winner commented looking @ the crowd still finishing in the heat 7 hours after him, that they experience the true spirit of the event. So was the U2 concert. 35 metres from the front or was it 50? Seeing the screen beautifully, but having to stretch to see the stars we wanted to thrill kiss, hold, &kill :-). Afterwards smelling from beer, nicotine, marijuana and dripping from sweat, but happy after a truly spiritual experience. It was the best worship of God I ever had (even better than church where I lead it) when we pleaded with God in 40 and throughout.
The event was broadcast semi-live over national television. Semi because the show started 9:30 and on tv @ 10 so they could squeze commercials in - so popmartish :-). Looking 2 the show afterwards on tv I got the best of both worlds. Live the vibe and crowd.....tv the quality and some moments you missed in the crowd. I taped it from my VCR to tape - great listen in the car. Anybody wanna trade? I need Achtung baby & Zooropa on CD. What a mess afterwards. Interesting - selling beer in plastic bottles - good thing :-). Were there from 5:00. Tickets (ours) cost 170 rand each for me and my youngest brother - I made him the U2 fan year's ago, so he bought the tickets. We sang "how long to sing this song probably for 5 minutes and heard some music and went wild!!! But that wasn't them. Just a cd. Then: looking for baby Jesus under the trash. U2 - thanx for blessing us. We'll pray for you guys. Peace to you and fans all around the world.

A Conspiracy of Hope was a short tour of six benefit concerts on behalf of Amnesty International that took place in the United States during June 1986. Held not to raise funds but to increase awareness of Amnesty on the 25th anniversary of its work for human rights, the shows were headlined by U2 and Sting. The last three shows featured a reunion of The Police. The tour was conceived by the Executive Director of Amnesty International's U.S. section, Jack Healey, and producer Martin Lewis, who had first recruited musicians to work with Amnesty several years before for The Secret Policeman's Balls series of benefit shows in England (1976-1981). The tour was run by famed rock promotor Bill Graham. Tickets for some of the shows were sold by mail-order lottery, a method popular in the 1970s for high-demand shows but here used for pretty much the last time, with computerized services such as Ticketron rapidly taking over. The concert in Denver was the worst attended show, even with all of the top names on the bill. The local promoter blamed the title of the concert for radio stations believing there truly was a conspiracy, hence the concert was not sold out . Lineup included: John Eddie, Third World, The Hooters, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, Ruben Blades, Neville Brothers, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Yoko Ono, Little Steven, Bob Geldof, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, The Police.

U2 - A Day At Tiffany's

The concert starts a bit flat, no matter how fast songs they play as openers (Out of Control, Twilight, etc.), but as we get further, the show and the atmosphere gets better and better. 'A Day Without Me' is fantastic, but it just prepares the listener for a simply incredible 'An Cat Dubh'. I never felt that it's a cinematic song, but this slow arrangement that is present here can totally give us sights of dirty alley-ways with wandering black cats - really a highlight of the night.
It's a shame that this song is followed by a totally weak 'Into The Heart', which sounds very uninspired. And here begins the premier-parade, the first new song is 'Surrender' which is quite enjoyable, but the band sounds a bit unsure about this - and with all the other debuts of the show. It's amusing to hear 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' being played without the 'rebel' feeling, but the biggest surprise comes, when 'New Year's Day' starts, and...Edge PLAYS THE PIANO RIFF THE RIGHT WAY, WITHOUT THE EXTRA NOTES!! I never heard this song played so accurately to the album version, and was really delighted to finally hear this. The final part is also triumphant, offering an extended '11'o Clock Tick Tock' followed by 'The Ocean' (the change is a bit dramatic), but 'A Celebration' and 'Fire' put the things in their right places, though I can't see how could they close a show with such a filler (I know they didn't, I Will Follow was repeated, but the recording ends here).

Robert: "We'd only been on for about a half an hour and everything was running late so Robert Palmer's road crew started motioning to us to stop. This bloke ran on and said 'If you don't stop playing, we're gonna pull the plug'. Simon immediately walked to the mike and shouted 'Fuck Robert Palmer! Fuck rock'n'roll!' and we started playing a really slow version of 'A Forest' which lasted about 15 minutes.
It was fucking brilliant. Unfortunately, when we finished, they threw all our stuff off the back of the stage ..."

The Cure play a string of festivals in Spain and France. The last, on August 9, at the Roman Amphitheatre in Provence, is filmed in it's entirety by Tim Pope, the first rock concert at the venue since Dire Straits two years previous.
"We wanted to film it ... because every concert we do now reaches a point that has seemed unattainable in the past and I wanted it captured for ever, before we move on or give up. I don't think it's a risk working with Pap because he isn't really a director. We could have got in some proper director to make a film of any old concert but he wouldn't know what the band was about and I want this to be a Cure film about The Cure."

Tim Pope: "This one's absolute psychedelic madness." To heighten the obvious comparsions with Pink Floyd's Live At Pompeii, the band play 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' at soundcheck. And, reports Melody Maker, they play it perfectly.
"The risks, of course, are many. Because of the limited budget, all the live filming had to be done on Saturday, at the concert, with close-ups following during Sunday's mock up. Rain on one or both days would have scuppered the whole thing - £150,000 literally down the rain because they couldn't comprehend their cheapest insurance quote: £50,000. I didn't rain until Monday."

The only true exclusiveness in the festival, the concert of The Cure risked a party taken courageous (?). The
Gothic teddy bear, made up in the eternal eyeliner and slobbery lipstick, the singer of the group, Robert Smith,
explained it a little before going up on stage: "In festival, we made the error to want everyone to like us. Today,
we do not play any more but for us and our fans. I am too old to play the pop one."

Leaving behind the lighter melodies which often made their singles successful, the icons of the British New Wave
concentrated on their darkest repertory. No tubes (?), but a maelstrom of psychedelic swirls and existential moans
advancing with the rhythm of a procession. Supported by dreamy lighting, these two hours of the show left the
crowd groggy before as much hypnotic blackness. Whereas one spoke there is little separation (?), the English
group announce a new album for next year, in which one should find, as a bonus, a solo album of Robert Smith. "

Morrissey - That's New Entertainment

2 September 1991 - Budokan - Tokyo, Japan

In Tokyo's Budokan, security was the tightest of this tour and the venue was separated into blocks. Fans were not allowed to leave their seats. Only one of them managed to reach Morrissey and hug him. The set was again sensibly scrambled and changes were made to its content. Covers "Trash" and "Cosmic Dancer" were reintegrated into the setlist, replacing part-timers "Will Never Marry" and "There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends". Just like earlier on the tour, "Trash" was tagged at the end of "Piccadilly Palare". During the break between the main set and the encore, the impatient crowd broke into a chant of Morrissey's name. After first encore "Sing Your Life" Morrissey started to say "So before we go..." but never finished his line. The band then did standard set closer "Disappointed".

Morrissey - Malmo, Sweden

This first of two consecutive concerts in Sweden was a great one. Morrissey and his musicians were in excellent form and the fans, despite having waited more than two hours for their idol to come on stage, were very enthusiastic and receptive. The setlist was shortened to 16 songs with the exclusion of "Late Night, Maudlin Street". As he came on stage Morrissey greeted his fans "Hello to the art and deco people of Malmö... Hello!" The classic "Suedehead" was preceded by "I'd just like to ask you one question..." which only made sense when followed by the first line of the song ("why do you come here?"). After "Little Man What Now" Morrissey adressed his favourite fan: "Well Julia, fancy seeing you here. Surprise, surprise... as always, is the sight of the night... How are you? (crowd cheers) I was talking to Julia. How are you Julia?... Well Julia's nice as well... well, thank you!" In the intro to "Hairdresser On Fire", Morrissey pointed to various people in the audience and said "I like you! I like you!" After the song he joined the crowd in a chant of his name. "Jack The Ripper" was introduced with the words "In Sweden of course, you self-destruct and take your own lives apparently, whereas in England we have people to kill us. These are the thoughts of Jack the Ripper..." After the song, probably in reply to fans shouting his name, he chanted "Gary Day, Gary Day, Gary Day!", then asked "What's happened to Sweden? Yeah but you don't win the Eurovision song contest anymore, do you? Why? Say what?... I remember Teach-In "Ding-A-Dong", do you remember? (crowd: 'no') Thank Christ!" He then introduced the next song: "You will not know the words to this song... neither do I. It's called... you won't believe me it's called 'The First Of The Gang To Die' (crowd cheers, so Morrissey adds, over the first bars) You don't know this song! No! No!" The following planned number was also a new one and Morrissey had a difficult time introducing it: "Here is another song and you will not know the words... What? No you won't. Even though... How come? How come though? Bla bla... You were in Copenhagen. Yes, me too! This is called 'I Like You'." In the latter number he changed a line to "No one I ever knew or have spoken to resembles me". After "Alsatian Cousin" Morrissey enquired "So, Malmö is famous for? (crowd: 'nothing!') Uh? For nothing? Are you sure it's famous for nothing? Well... (to himself) famous for nothing..." Following "Everyday Is Like Sunday" he thanked the crowd "...enormously" then enquired "Will you be in Stockholm tomorrow? What for?" After "Sister I'm A Poet" Morrissey replied to fans: "But you can! Sorry what was that? Oh!" Then "The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores" was introduced with "Well, I don't know if you read the music press but if you do, you will know... (crowd: 'Crashing Bores!') Am I really so obvious? Yesss... (very quickly) 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores'!" After the song Morrissey returned to the subject: "So, the world is full of crashing bores and, I wonder, can you name any? Who? Who? Elton John? Yeah, I think someone said that before you... Who? Enemy? What's that? Aah, Public Enemy... Who? James Dean Bradfield is a crashing bore? Why? A fat crashing bore?... Gene? No, Gene are nice... Gene are nice. They are, they really are..." "Meat Is Murder", for once, was introduced with humour: "Oddly enough I was speaking earlier about the Eurovision Song Contest and we have been asked to represent England in the Eurovision Song Contest (crowd cheers) and this is our song..." The song was followed with the customary introduction of the band: "Would you please let me introduce you to four steaming hunks: bending is Boz... standing is Gary... sitting is Deano... crying is Alain... (in a Swedish accent) and my name is Sven, and I am Irish blood, English heart!" The latter words, of course, served as an introduction to the newish "Irish Blood, English Heart". The latter number was very well received. Morrissey thanked the audience, then was thanked back, and this prompted him to say "No, thank you! Julia, they're terribly nice, they really are... (crowd, envious of Julia getting the attention: 'what about the rest of us?') I was speaking of the rest - touchy, touchy, touchy... I'm trying, I'm trying... but, I'm failing..." Before main set closer "Speedway" he said "Thank you for listening. Thank you for standing... but you have to be up for work tomorrow... (crowd: no!) You have to be at McDonald's sharp... oh yes!" His final words before the encore were "Thank you for being so kind... Please, don't forget me, don't forget Oscar Wilde, don't forget Johnny Thunders, don't forget Jesus, don't forget Nico, don't forget Klaus Nomi. I love you!"

Morrissey - Chastain Park

Agreed that Chastain Park was not the most ideal venue for Morrissey, but he still seemed to be in good spirits and enjoying hurling his "easy target" digs at the place. [Didn't mean he wanted to sing the entire 20 songs there though!] The people in the pit who wanted to get up by the stage were incredibly lucky because there was no moat/other large barrier separating the stage and the crowd area. So, there they were, leaning right on the stage. Security was very lax for people's proximity to the stage, and the movable green plastic barriers were in effect just pushed aside as more people wanted to move in and abut the stage. Wish I had known to trek down there and just move in too. He obviously liked The Tabernacle from his 2004 date in Atlanta (per his favorable mention of it last night), but I have to wonder if Chastain was chosen due to higher capacity and with the season ticket holders it was guaranteed revenue from them + those coming just for him. Would certainly have rather seen him at The Tabernacle, though. [Nice that you could BYOB though. Didn't get gauged like in Las Vegas...] Luckily no UPS brown covering the lads last night. Black on black with variety of ties displayed. Yes, this outdoor venue was only ~ half-filled when Moz first took the stage (still light out then), but by the end, I would say it seemed 85% filled. Remember also that there were various (entire) rows vacant since they were blocked by signs explaining that they were designated exit rows and no one was to be in them. (I think these blocked off exit rows were a fire safey precaution due to the limited entrance/exits at Chastain.) So, by the end, it in effect looked filled up, and Don't knock the bats! They were quite entertaining whilst moz's intro video was playing but impossible to see because it was still light. Not to mention they kept the bugs off of us. :)
-Entered the stage: "You've brought dinner; I've brought mine" and held up a red box of what looked like Cheez-Its or Ritz Crackers? (had pitiful seat so I couldn't tell exactly -- but poster above me did indicate they were Cheez-Its)
-After Panic, "So I take it, I take it this isn't the Tabernacle then? I think we're in the wrong place. Bye."
-After First of the Gang to Die: "Where am I? How did I end up here? I'm a serious artist." Then to person in front row: "What is this place?" Fan: "I'm not a season ticket holder; I'm a fan." Moz: "By the looks of things, you're heavily outnumbered." (then laughter erupted from crowd)
-After All You Need Is Me: "So, I really am here; is that correct? I haven't been drinking or anything? This really isn't Birmingham, AL, is it? Well, it could be."
-After I Just Want To See the Boy Happy: fan got Morrissey's attention and hands him a gift with a red bow. Moz: For me, what is it?" Fan: "A photo album of the last 20 years." Moz: "Of you or of me?" Fan: "Of us!" (crowd erupts in laughter)
-After Disappointed: "So, this could either go that way (points to his left) or that way (points to his right)" (perhaps suggesting exiting the stage - and not coming back - in the left wing or the right wing?!)
-After Let Me Kiss You: "So, if you could find a way to put down your ham and tongue(? - couldn't exactly make out the word there, but thought it sounded like tongue!) sandwich. You see it's so difficult to communicate. We passed a restaurant today called The Pig and Chick. Could barbarism get any worse?" Then a little girl was boosted onto the stage and Morrissey hugged her saying "This is my daughter." then a slight pause and, "It was never meant to be this way."
-Next: band introductions. Preceded each name with "Please say hello to", but for Boz (introduced last), said "Fire, famine, flood but always there is Boz Boorer". (much applause of Boz here) Then "But say goodbye to me."
-After You Have Killed Me: "So what the hell happens now? Anybody know?"
-After At Last I Am Born: "I think with this exercise, we've gained 2 new friends and 4000 new enemies. That's How People Grow Up." (then directly into the song)
-After That's How People Grow Up: "I was born and raised in a strange little place called England for which this next song speaks half a volume." (then into Everyday Is Like Sunday)
-After I Will See You in Far Off Places: "So maybe afterall cabaret is my forte, and next week I'll be singing at the Pig and Chick."
-After The Boy With The Thorn In His Side: "There must be a question." (hands mic to one person) Fan: "How are you?" Moz: "Do you really want to know? Another question." (gives mic to someone else) Fan: "I want to know what you did for fun in Birmingham." Moz: "Next question" (but did not hand mic off again, and went into Irish Blood, English Heart)
-After Irish Blood, English Heart: "So, something has really confused me. When I came on tonight, I actually had hair." (believe he was talking about his head full of sweat that completely flattened his hair).
