The Smiths - So This Is America
5 August 1986 - Great Wood Performing Arts Center - Mansfield, MA
The setlist was sensibly scrambled for this first American date of the "The Queen Is Dead" tour. Fan favourite "How Soon Is Now?" was moved forward to the beginning of the show in the hopes that there would be less stage rushing. Actually, no one (or very few) got on stage for this concert. "Shakespeare's Sister" and "Vicar In A Tutu" were dropped in favour of "I Know It's Over", played for the first time in North America. This uneventful gig turned out much better than the previous one, but not as well as the recent London and Ottawa concerts. Morrissey shed his shirt and turned it into a noose which he spun over his head during "Panic". After "Never Had No One Ever", Morrissey said "Thank you, you're very kind, very clever". After "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side", he declared "You have good taste, thank you..." At the time of this concert, "Is It Really So Strange?" was still unreleased, so the reception from the audience was rather quiet, prompting Morrissey to say "Oh don't pretend you liked it". "Meat Is Murder" could be heard soundchecked, it had not yet been performed on this leg of the tour. Tickets were $17.50.
