Morrissey - The Cheapset Show In Town

9 February 2000 - Barrymore Theatre - Madison, WI

The concert went down well, but the crowd was not the most energetic one of the tour. Morrissey was still in the best of moods and very talkative. There were quite a few changes in the setlist. "Billy Budd", "Reader Meet Author", "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" and "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" were temporarily dropped and replaced with "Tomorrow", "Lost", "Half A Person" and "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side". This was the latter title's first outing in 2000. Morrissey's first words after getting on stage were "Welcome to the cheapest show in town!". After the opening pair of "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" and "The Boy Racer" he extended his greetings with "Welcome to the Drew Barrymore Theater... it's alright, I know it's John... but what the difference is, I really don't know..." After "Tomorrow" he said "I'm slightly overcome by all your smiling faces, it's... not the way it was supposed to be, really... where did I go wrong?... (to a fan shouting 'I love you') What do you mean exactly? Yeah but why? Ask yourself that question... the answer is frightening..." Over the opening bars of "Alma Matters" Morrissey said "don't pretend!". After the song's opening line "So the choice I have made" he added "which is this". He followed a few occurrences of the chorus line "Alma matters in mind body and soul in part and in hole" with "she does, she does". After the song he said "I just realised that the thing that was throwing me, throwing me - you know - throwing me, the thing that was throwing me was the number of people who were wearing spectacles... it's extraordinary... absolutely extraordinary... That's not necessarily a good thing, I mean..." Then when the opening notes of "November Spawned A Monster" were heard and the crowd cheered, he mocked it by shouting "My God!" in a little girl's voice".
The most unusual thing about the evening must have been the sock monkeys thrown on stage by a fan. Morrissey occasionally commented on them: "Someone has thrown this on stage as a gift I assume... what do I do with it? Oh I see... What? There's more to come? God! God help me... Did you make them yourself? How did I guess? Thank you..." After "Hairdresser On Fire" he joked "Now the usual rule is, whoever gets the t-shirt gets me but... I'm not too sure tonight, I have to know who the person was first... Was that funny? Not to me?" After "Speedway", to a fan shouting "thank you!" he replied "no thank you... Alright then thank me..." He then announced "Somebody sent me a very personal note which I'd like to read to all of you... maybe I shouldn't read it... (fans press him on to do it) Okay!" After "Is It Really So Strange?" Morrissey commented on someone's sign: "You know you don't spell Morissey like that, did you know that?... Just a figment of somebody's imagination I think... which is a good thing... cause your imagination is actually real!" Somewhere into "Break Up The Family" he sang "you say break up the family and let's begin to sing off key". "Meat Is Murder" was preceded by a sarcastic speech "I know that Madison is the home of the world beef expo... which is where all the he-men get together and talk about the rape and the snuffing out of millions and millions of animals, it's an incredibly macho thing and (giggles) incredibly brave.. they're really great men... I know..." After the song he took his message on a tangent: "And to the macho men of the Madison world beef expo, metaphorically we're right up your arses... we say arses... in fact I can't actually say asses... I think of things, you know, that you stroke, really is... but then I've got lots of problems..." After he was done with his vocal part in "I Can Have Both" Morrissey said "What's that friend? Why is everybody looking at me? What did I do? What did I say?" After the song another sock monkey landed on stage, which prompted Morrissey to comment "I've just been given number 4... I don't know why that's funny... Oh I do, I do know why that's funny... sorry, this says Alain, yeah? What? Alain this is you, apparently... and the likeness is incredible!" After "The Teachers Are Afraid Of the Pupils", to someone shouting "You're losing your hair!" Morrissey replied "I can tell... I'd see a doctor..." "A Swallow On My Neck" was introduced with the question and answer "What can I say about this next song?... Nothing..." Next up "Half A Person" was preceded by "This next song takes me back to the days when I worked at Footlocker... Further back, my friend... further back..." Before going into "Now My Heart Is Full", to someone shouting for "The End Of The Family Line" Morrissey asked "Are you joking? God Almighty!" Before going into the encore he announced "I'll be in the (?) bar later if anyone fancies a rum and coke..."
