Morrissey - London

16 November 1999 - Forum - London, UK

The final of four consecutive nights at the London Forum was again wild and energetic. Morrissey was in extremely good spirits, he joked with his fans and made many yet unheard lyric changes. The setlist was slightly scrambled and "Roy's Keen" was dropped and replaced by "Sunny". Coming on stage, Morrissey and his band walked up to the edge and posed there for a short while. Morrissey greeted the crowd with "Hello cockney rejects!... You sound far too happy, that will change!" In set opener "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" he did the usual live changes "someone kindly told me that you wasted every good thing in your life" and "you don't need to look so peeved", but he also sang "you're gonna need West Ham on your side" twice. After "The Boy Racer" came the second part of his greeting, and he used the opportunity to tease his fans with a disguised invitation to try and get on stage: "Thank you, and welcome to the fourth night of our residency. The final night. Now's your chance... dunno what you want to do but, now's your chance..." Right before going into "Reader Meet Author" Morrissey asked someone "Are you okay?" After the song he answered someone in the audience "I knew you'd say that... so easy..." After "Sunny" he jokingly introduced the following song on the setlist with "This song is called 'You Are Definitely Very Strange'..." The number was in fact "Is It Really So Strange?" and after it he first thanked the audience "thank you it's very nice of you" then said "I'd like to say hello to the ? contingent, but I don't really know why... (giggles) they don't deserve it... too late now... (someone shouts something negative) Oh yes! Oh yes!" In "Hairdresser On Fire", for the second time that evening, Morrissey namedropped his current favourite football team. He sang "Where is West Ham, so much for West Ham, it is home of the free or what?". He then jokingly shouted the answer to the latter question: "It's 'what'!" After the song he tried twice to throw his shirt into the crowd and it kept landing back on stage, so he said "It didn't want to go and I'm not gonna force it... it wants to stay with me..." He put it back on and finally managed to throw the shirt after "Trouble Loves Me". He changed into a Canning Town Sauna Club shirt instead. Someone then shouted "You're the one for me fatty!", probably less a request for the song with that title than a comment on the skin Morrissey had just exposed. The object of the gibe quickly replied "you're just jealous!". Right before singing the chorus "everybody's lost" in "Lost" Morrissey pointed at various people in the crowd and said for each of them "Look! Look! Look!" to illustrate how everybody he pointed at was lost. On a few recent dates he had been giving speeches against fox hunting as an introduction to "Meat Is Murder". On this date, before going into "Alma Matters" (and not "Meat Is Murder"), he announced "I'm not gonna give a speech tonight about fox hunting because when I tried it last night I said everything backwards which really encouraged people to want to keep fox hunting so..." After "Alma Matters" Morrissey started by saying "You're very gracious thank you..." then teased someone in the audience "I have a feeling somebody wants to say something, I think he's here... Where is he? You should have brought your own microphone, that's what I did!" In "Tomorrow" the singer changed a line to "and if it does come, will I still feel human". After the song he asked the same person as earlier, or perhaps someone else near him "Where should I remember you from? (person answers) From where?" In "Speedway" he changed the subject of a line by singing "all of the rumours keeping you grounded, you never said, I never said". Exceptionally in "Break Up The Family" Morrissey did not sing "I'm in love for the last time" like he usually did in live performances of that song. Instead he returned to the album version's "I'm in love for the first time". After the song he gave someone a shirt and asked them "Do you have a preference, this one or the other one?... Nobody ever gives me shirts..." The standard encore on this tour was "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" and it was wittily introduced by Morrissey with "There's nothing like spontaneity... and this is nothing like spontaneity!". At the very end Morrissey saluted his fans "Thank you, you've been very nice... God bless you. God bless me. God bless Alain. God bless Boz. God bless Gary. God bless Spike. God bless me. God bless you. Goodnight! Thank you! We love you!".
